EDITOR TERLICK SAYS: It seems a bit odd, but ‘modern’ Triumphs have become classics in their own right. After being seemingly dead an buried through the 1980s, Triumph was reincarnated in 1990 by English billionaire property tycoon John Bloor with a new range of bikes wearing the names and some of the styling cues from Triumph-of-old. So the first of those ‘modern’ Triumphs are now more than 30 years old. (Cripes. So how old am I?) And even second-generation ‘modern’ Triumphs, like this lovely 1200 Daytona of Mike’s are looking forward to their 30th birthdays in the next few. The modern Daytona started life as a four-cylinder 1000cc with the first crop of John Bloor’s Triumphs, but had a lukewarm market reaction. It’s stablemate Trophy was a better highway bike, and the Daytona had neither the styling nor the performance to really cut the mustard as a sports bike. When it was re-released in 1993, the Daytona had been whacked with the handsome stick, given a much more sporty riding position, and now churned out 147 horses — that doesn’t sound huge today, but it was a 47% increase and a seriously big number back in the early ’90s. And as Mike points out in his comments above, that’s enough power to go silly-fast if you so desire. I’ve seen this bike — it was on show at this year’s The Bike Shed Times Capel River Classic — and it is a beautiful example of a wonderful bike. Great stuff.
