1981 Maico 490 Mega 2 – $20,000

SELLER SAYS: 1981 Maico 490 Mega 2 for sale. Last of the  twin-shocks. This bike was restored around 2006 and included an engine rebuild, new plastics, seat re-upholstered, rebuilt wheels, tyres, frame repainted and much more. The bike was only test ridden up the street and back and put in the shed under a tarp. The bike was recently started but not ridden. The frame and engine numbers are correct and there appears to be no damage apart from the ‘used’ Akront rims. Contact Greg on 0408 656 220. (Mid north coast NSW)

One of the greatest motorcycles of all time. It marks a time in history when long-travel twin shocks, right-side-up forks, kickstarters, Magura controls and very big very fast two stroke engines were kings of the hill, and just a nanosecond before all those things just plain stopped. It also marks the greatest moment for one of motorcycle history’s greatest brands, because shortly after releasing this glorious machine it all went to poo for Maico and the company collapsed in a heap. We listed one of these for sale recently with a $20k asking price and it disappeared very quickly. That one was a functioning race bike with appropriate modifications, while this one looks mostly unmolested and destined for a man cave, games room, or climate-controlled private collection (parked alongside a Brough Superior, we suggest). Or maybe a muddy motocross track, if you really must … Learn more here.
