EDITOR TERLICK SAYS: Moto Guzzi’s much-loved 850 LeMans is one of history’s most beautiful motorcycles and was born, as so often is the case with great classics, on a racetrack. It was the 1971 Bol d’Or 24-hour at Le Mans, France, when a souped-up bored-out 750 Guzzi almost pulled off one of history’s greatest wins. Almost. After leading the race for ten hours, the Guzzi apparently broke a rocker. It wasn’t fatal, and the bike limped home to finish a very impressive third. It was enough. Moto Guzzi management gave the nod to an 850 sports bike, but it wasn’t until five years later that engineer Lino Tonti finally gave the world the 850 LeMans. The bike’s beautiful lines, glorious exhaust note, way-funky seat and teensy bikini fairing make the original LeMans unmistakeable even today. This bike of Mike’s looks to be a superb example.
